Requirements for the essay: 1750-2000 words (approx. 7-8 pages), double-spaced, 12-point Arial font or equivalent, with 2.54 cm (1”) margins on all sides of the page. This does not include a Title Page that includes your name, the course title and number, the title of the article review, and the name of your T.A. A word count must be included on the title page. The essay should have page numbers starting with page 1 which is the actual text of your essay. The title page should not be numbered and should not be included in the word count. Do not back-print your essay.
Your review must be written in essay form with no sub-headings within the text. Any reference to either the article or book should be in brackets within the text of your essay and include a page number, (eg. (Hill, 25; Oduwobi et al, 25)
NOTE: There is no research required for this essay; therefore, you do not need a bibliography page or footnotes. If you do use other sources to write this essay, you will be penalized.
Organization of the essay:
1. An introductory paragraph that gives the author, title, and subject of the article and the book. You should also include the article’s thesis. A thesis is a statement (not a question) of what the author says they are going to prove. Do not copy the author’s thesis – put it in your own words. Also, state the subject of Hill’s book and how it is connected to the article. Be concise and to the point. The Introduction should be no more than 3/4 page.
2. The next part of your review should include a discussion of the main points/arguments made by the authors of the article to support their thesis. You need to give specific examples here. Again, do not use direct quotes. Give specific page numbers from the article and the novel for your examples (in brackets as above). For an essay of this length, you will need to discuss a minimum of 5 arguments. This part of the essay should be approx. 3-4 pages.
3. The third section of your review presents your evaluation of the thesis and arguments given in the article (some suggestions to think about are below) and should include comments on the validity of the arguments. You will need to explain why or why not you think a particular argument is valid. This section should be approx. 3 pages. You can, if you like, integrate this part with part 2 (above), and discuss and evaluate each argument together. This section by itself should be approx. 3 pages, or if combined with # 2, 5-6 pages.
4. Concluding paragraph. This sums up your argument and should be about ½ page.
